Dr. Shafern Tan

A 2016 graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dr. Shafern Tan brings a
wealth of international and specialized clinical experience to Island Medical. Dr. Tan’s
foundational training in Malaysia spanned Orthopaedics, Surgery, and Internal Medicine, eventually specializing as a Pediatric Registrar.
Since 2019, she has been a hard working contributor to the Irish healthcare system, serving
at the Rotunda, Mercy University Hospital, and CHI Crumlin. Her tenure in the Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Crumlin provided her with unique expertise in managing
complex, high-stakes medical challenges in children. Commencing her GP specialist training
in 2021 she has extensive experience in obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency medicine,
rheumatology, palliative medicine and medicine for the elderly.

Dr. Tan is registered with multiple specialities, holding full membership in the Royal College
of Pediatrics United Kingdom (2020) and the Irish College of General Practitioners (2025).
Her commitment to specialized primary care is reflected in her additional credentials:
- Women’s Health: Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology; Certificate in
Contraception and Advanced Certificate in Long-Acting Reversible Contraception
(LARC). - Advanced Diagnostics: Currently undertaking a Fellowship in Primary Care
Ultrasound with the Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI). - Musculoskeletal Medicine: Actively working toward mastering MSK joint injections
under ultrasound guidance.

Driven by the mantra that "no knowledge is a waste," Dr. Tan is dedicated to bridging the gap between high-level tertiary medical care and rural communities. Her goal is to bring
hospital-grade diagnostic precision—such as point-of-care ultrasound—directly into the
community setting to improve patient outcomes.
Personal Background
A former elite Malaysian athlete, Dr. Tan represented Malaysia in Fencing at the Commonwealth Games. This competitive background fuels her professional interest in active lifestyles and healthy aging. Now firmly "grounded in Kerry" after marrying a local, she balances her medical practice with a passion for sunshine, family time, and aspire to train for Triathlons !
